Baby Monitors- How to make a choice

As a new parent, there are plenty of options for just about every baby device you can think of or imagine.  It is so overwhelming to look at all your options and know which one is right for you and your family.  For many people, the decision is as simple as going to your local baby store, and standing in the aisle staring at monitors until you become overwhelmed and just pick one.  However, there may be a better way to choose.

For starters, talk to your mommy friends.  Many already-been-there mothers know a thing or two about what did or did not work for them, and why.  Word of mouth suggestions on a product can be some of the best.

Check out reviews on websites like Amazon or specific store websites.  Sure, there are always going to be positive and negative responses for each product, but if the majority are negative or you see a pattern as to why, you may just have your answer to move on to another product.

Learn the market before you buy.  There are plenty of different options you may not even have known about.  Did you want a simple, audio monitor?  Or were you looking for something that you can watch a video stream from your smart phone?  Did you want to know when the baby stops moving or breathing?  Did you want to be able to watch from outside of your home and have more remote access?  Because all of those options are currently available, in a reasonable price range.

Look outside of just the baby monitor market.  Several electronic stores sell monitoring devices that actually provide more information for often a smaller price tag than traditional baby monitors.  You may also be able to buy traditional baby monitors at these stores for a lower cost.  It's always better to know your range of choices!

How did you choose your baby monitor?

What Parents Should Tell Their Kids About Personal Safety

By Cori Baker
What Parents Should Tell Their Kids About Personal Safety

Children are not spared from the vicious acts of other people. There are about 2,300 children who go missing each day, as reported by the FBI. The statistics of kids being abducted is really alarming and parents should take an active participation to stop such incidence. Every parent cares so much about his child more than his own life. Most parents would refer their kids as the precious gem and having your child abducted is the most terrifying thing that could ever happen to you. Thus, as early as now you've got to do something to solve this concern. Child psychology experts suggest you to start briefing your kids about their personal safety soon as they hit the age of 3 or 4. This is the right time that kids may already have a good grasp with matters concerning safety and security.

Keep Communication Lines Open
Open communication plays a significant role in the process of telling your kids about personal safety. As a parent, you should be able to effectively communicate with them and you must also see to it that in turn they can openly communicate to you. You can always remind them to tell you whatever their concerns are, especially those things that are making them uncomfortable.

Discuss the Ploys of Strangers
The majority of children have a trusting nature and since their trust can easily be gained aggressors tend to take advantage of it. You should educate your kids about the nature of a stranger and that being a person that you and even other family strangers don't know. Better yet, you can tell them not to be too friendly with strangers. Aside from that, you can also teach them the possible ploys of strangers who may have bad intentions in them and these usually include offering things to them (especially candies and chocolates), asking for directions and other schemes just to gain the attention of the child. Whatever their tricks are, you should tell your child to say NO to them.

Holler In Case of Emergency
When someone is trying to hurt them or they think is acting suspiciously, they should know exactly what to do which include running while shouting for help to a nearby public place. You should also orient your kids on how to dial 911. Apart from that, you should also take collect calls so as your kids can reach you in times of emergency.

Safety Gadgets
With a great technology that we have these days, there's not a single reason for you not to avail of it. There are personal safety equipment that you can use to arm your kids with such as a taser gun, stun gun and many others. You just have to properly instruct them on how to use these things and that these should only be used in emergency situations, not to poke and pull a prank on other kids.

These are just a few of the personal safety tips that you should discuss with your kids. There's over a dozen that you can find on the net.

5 Basic Child Safety Tips For Parents

Child Safety Tip #1: Medicine Safety
To ensure child safety we have to keep all medicines out of the reach of children. Generally we all need one type of medicine or the other at some point in our lives. Some medicines help us to recover from sicknesses and diseases. Others help to protect us from sicknesses and diseases. When medicines are administered properly by a responsible adult they can be very helpful and beneficial indeed. However, in the hands of children medicines can be very harmful and deadly. We should not take any risks with our children. At all times we should see to it that we have personally put all medicines safely out of the reach of our children.

Child Safety Tip #2: Kitchen Safety
The kitchen is a great place for food and nourishment, wonderful meals and superb cuisine, family time and happy memories. Unfortunately it can also be a place of serious domestic accidents unless of course we maintain proper safety measures all the time. There is a potential danger to our children from fire, hot liquids, utensils, appliances etc in every kitchen.  Therefore we must remember to keep an eye on our children whenever they are with us in the kitchen. For the sake of child safety no child should be left unattended in any kitchen for even one minute.

Child Safety Tip #3: Electrical Safety
We have to teach our children about electrical safety at an early age to help protect them from any harm. All children need to be taught some basic rules about electricity safety such as: Do not unplug any device by pulling the cord – instead hold the plug and remove it gently from the socket; Do not handle any electrical appliance when your hands are wet – first you have to dry your hands before you handle the appliance; Do not stick your finger or any object into any electrical socket or outlet – the current in the socket will pass through you and harm you. As part of our child safety efforts we need to patiently teach our children these and many other rules about electrical safety at home.

Child Safety Tip #4: Fire Safety
We have to teach our children about the danger of playing with fire. This must be an on-going child safety education since potential fire hazards are easily available in almost all homes. Further to that we must teach our children what to do in case of any fire outbreak at home. We must go through the mock fire drill with them and show them the best escape route to the chosen safe spot outside the house where the whole family will gather in case of any fire. It is best to teach children about fire safety before the need ever arises.

Child Safety Tip #5: Internet Safety
The benefits of the internet are too numerous to be counted. At times we marvel and wonder how we survived in the past without websites, emails, instant messaging, video chats and a host of other internet applications. Nevertheless these benefits should not cause us to forget or ignore the looming danger to our children from predators and bullies on the internet. Among other things we have to teach our children not to give any personal information such as their names, phone numbers, names of their parents, street address, school location etc to any stranger on the internet. We must assure our children that in case of any doubt or uncertainty about any matter concerning internet safety they can always contact us for guidance and advice.

Teaching The Importance of Safety To Children Without Using Fear

Teaching The Importance of Safety To Children Without Using Fear
By Cori Baker

Parents have an important role of keeping their children safe. Teaching children the importance or safety is vital. Parents won't be at their side all of the time. Positive reinforcement has always been an effective method in molding the behavior of your child. This will likewise be effective in teaching safety.

There might be no other person who can teach a child about safety. The parents have the authority and responsibility to do so. There are a lot of opportunities that parents will have. They can talk to their child when eating breakfast or dinner. They can take up the topic about personal safety while the family is watching TV.

You might not be able to provide all the possible scenarios and the actions that your child should do. What you can do, however, is to tell them to be smart. Make them analyze the situation and determine if they are in trouble. They should also be aware of factors that can increase their vulnerability. Teach them not to put themselves in danger. Walking alone at night can be riskier than walking with a group of people in the middle of the day.

Understanding the environment that you are in is important. But, parents should likewise teach kids about the importance of having the right kind of character. When faced with a potential dangerous situation, you should instruct them to keep calm. They should be strong enough to still know what correct actions to take. Even young kids should not just break down and cry. They should learn how to fight and remain aware of their situation.

The time when you will start teaching your kids about safety might not really matter. The age of a child can determine the preparedness and level of understanding. But, age will not be your sole consideration. Their level of education will matter. The method that you have used will also play a big part.

You will not do all the talking. You also have to listen to what your kids say. This will help you determine their level of preparedness for whatever lessons you are going to teach them.

Instead of creating a whole new life for your kids, consider making safety precautions around their pre-existing habits. It can be difficult to make your kids learn about something that totally different from what they have been used to. Creating things out of what they have been living with for some time can be effective. It may be more challenging on your part.

Instead of making guesses, you might want to consider talking to your child. You will be able to come up with more effective measures if you know what they truly want. Develop a relationship that fosters open communication. Your child should voluntarily inform you where he or she is. There should be trust between the two of you. Telling lies can have detrimental effects in the long run. Safety measures can be more effective if you and your child are working together. You can prevent unfortunate events from happening.

Tips To Keep Your Children Safe Inside Their Bedroom

Tips To Keep Your Children Safe Inside Their Bedroom
By Melody Andes

When you have really young kids at home, your priority should be their safety. The bedroom has to be one of the most important places that you need to focus on.

First of all, determine if your child can sleep on a bed. Younger children are safer when they are placed in a cot. That piece of furniture will have rails that can keep your child from falling out of the bed. Also, a large bed might not be appropriate for a very small child. Older children who need bigger places to sleep in can have a bed. You need to change the cots that they have always slept on with a small bed. If you want, you can even have side rails installed on that small bed.

The cots need to have additional protection. There are those products that are made from hardwood. Your child can bump on the rails and that can be a cause of injury. Make sure that you place something soft on the sides. Thin pillows that are held in place may be enough.

The bed has to be low in order to avoid injuries when your child falls out of it. When the bed is not too high, there might be no need for you to use side rails. You also shouldn't worry and shouldn't keep checking on your child to see if he or she is tucked in bed. Even in the middle of the night, there will be no worries that your child has fallen off his or her bed.

Decide where it will be best to position the bed. Placing it against a wall can be a good idea as the wall can serve as additional safety guard. However, you also risk the chance of injuring your child when he or she bumps into the hard surface of the wall. If you have no other choice but to place the bed near a wall, consider placing padding on the part of the wall that is adjacent to the bed.

The bed, however, has to be kept away from a window. You don't want to give your child an extra leverage in order to reach the window's lock. If you have blinds or curtains hung on those windows, they may likewise serve as risks for accidents.

When you have mats beside or under the bed, make sure that they are non-slip. Your child can jump off the bed, step on the mat and slip. You wouldn't want this to happen.

Make sure that the bed is sturdy. There shouldn't be any parts that can be removed easily. As much as possible, the bed's structure should not be moving or swaying when someone gets on it. The screws have to be placed correctly. There shouldn't be any missing screws. Regularly check those parts of the bed. You have to make sure that there are no protruding parts. Also check if there are parts that are falling off. You will make sure that your child is safe by preventing whatever accident from happening.

Child Safety in the Home - 7 Child Proofing Tips For Your Home

Child Safety in the Home - 7 Child Proofing Tips For Your Home
By Marie Stark

The final papers have been signed and you're ready to move into your new home. But before you do, don't forget to consider child safety in the home.

Child proofing your new home should be a priority - one you can and should complete before you move in. Child proofing doesn't have to be a long and drawn out process -- many home safety products are available on the market. If you follow the seven tips below, you can easily child proof your new house in less than one day.

Child proofing Tip #1 - If It Doesn't Look Safe, It Probably Isn't!
As a parent, you have a pretty good idea of what is and isn't safe for your child. If something looks dangerous, figure out what you can do to make it safer. For example, staircases always pose a danger to a young child. Why worry about your child falling down the stairs when you can install a child safety gate (often called a baby gate) at the top AND bottom to keep your youngster off the stairs when you're not watching? This won't prevent the older kids from sliding down the banister but at least it will prevent the little ones from falling down the stairs. When installing a baby gate on stairs, make sure it is held permanently in place. Do not use pressure-mounted gates. While they may seem strong to you, small children can easily put too much pressure on the gate causing it to dislodge and fall.

Childproofing Tip #2 - Learn From Your Children
Your children WILL find the most dangerous things in your house, often finding things to do that you would never have considered but that can cause serious injury. If your child gets hurt, don't let yourself think that your child has learned and will not do it again. Chances are, he or she will! Thank them for showing you the danger and do something to prevent it.

Childproofing Tip #3 - Store all Medicines, Cleaners and Other Dangerous Substances Out of Your Children's Reach
Move all poisonous substance out of the reach of your children. Safety is often overlooked for convenience. If you must store any type of cleaning substance or medicine within a child's reach, be sure to put safety latches on your cabinet doors and/or drawers. If at all possible, store cleaning materials and medicines out of a child's reach and sight. The ledge of the bathtub and under the sink ARE NOT good places to store cleaning items. Razors are another item that can be dangerous to an unsuspecting child. Children love to imitate adults. Do not give them the opportunity to mimic shaving with a real razor - the results can be very painful.

Childproofing Tip #4 - Prevent Children from Accessing Windows and Blind Cords
You've probably heard horror stories of children falling several stories after pushing on a "secure" window screen or falling out of a window a parent thought they could never reach. Children are extremely creative and curious - they can find ways to get into, onto and out of things you would never imagine possible.Be sure all windows, whether screened or not, are either out of reach of a child or securely locked. You can purchase a child safety door lock or child safety window lock at most stores. Blind cords are another potential hazard for both children and pets. Cords should be wrapped up and secured out of reach a child. You can easily wrap the cord around a hook on the wall or even around itself and then tuck it out of sight on a curtain rod or on the top of window blinds.

Childproofing Tip #5 - Protect Outlets
Common outlets can be a danger to young children who like to put things where they don't belong. When we moved into our house, we were amazed to find 128 outlets that needed to be covered. The easiest way to protect children from an outlet is to use a safety plug to cover each outlet. The safety plug is inserted into the outlet much the same as you would insert a plug. As long as the safety plug is in place, nothing can be put into the outlet and the plugs are very difficult for children to remove.

Childproofing Tip #6 - Child Toy Safety
Remove small toys from the reach of young children. Small toys and small pieces of just about anything can pose a choking hazard to young children. Don't be comforted by the fact that your child "never puts things in his or her mouth." Be safe rather than sorry by getting in the habit of picking up anything that is less than three inches in diameter. Older children should be taught to pick up and put away their toys to prevent their younger siblings from getting an item that could be hazardous. A source of choking that is often overlooked is food. Items that seem safe - like grapes, hotdogs, apples and hard boiled eggs - should always be cut into small pieces to avoid choking. Hot dogs should be served in quarters or halves to make them easier to chew.

Childproofing Tip #7 - Child Water Safety
Never leave small children unsupervised around standing water. Common household items such as buckets, toilets, bathtubs, filled sinks, bird baths, ponds, spas and pools can be a danger to your child. There are many inexpensive safety devices that can be used to make these items safer. For example, you can use a toilet lid lock to prevent small children from raising the toilet lid. Locks are available for windows and doors that will prevent children from gaining access to a yard. Self-closing springs are available for gates and doors that lead to water areas. Although it may be inconvenient, a padlock or other locking device should be used on all gates leading to pools, spas and ponds. The lock should be relocked after each use. There is no substitute for adult supervision but there are many things you can do to make your children safer and your supervisory job a little bit easier.
